May Day 2013 Our Roads Are For Revelry Not For FBI Tanks - Jacob Dean covers a May Day 2013 action in Portland: Concerned Portland Citizen Jesse Hadden leads an early May Day 2013 rally at Terry D. Schrunk Plaza in front of Portland City Hall. This "non-permitted" event drew a few dozen participants, sign makers, a couple different speakers, at least three federal homeland security suv's and personnel, two local network television news crews, a local radio station reporter, and a local newspaper reporter. This event was separate from the larger May Day march and rally in Portland later on...

This from the Facebook Page:

The FBI rolled an Armored Personnel Carrier full of federal combat police down the streets of SE Portland on Friday, to serve a sealed warrant, without explanation to the community. Meanwhile, they're continuing in a pre-May Day campaign of targeted harassment against local activists -- in Portland, Oakland, Olympia, and Seattle. They're shutting down entire city blocks with military hardware. They're harassing activists at home, at places of work, at school, even on their jogging routes.

This, after more than two years of coordinated nation-wide violence directed against peaceful protesters working for social justice. This is the face of terror in America, that threatens our freedoms and our way of life. We will neither be intimidated, nor baited. Instead, we reclaim the streets for radically-positive community action! These are OUR STREETS, and we claim them for peace and revelry!

While this event is permitted by our sovereign rights as free human beings, this event is not permitted by the city.

Jacob Dean Needs Your Vote NOW! - Netroots Nation 2013

The heated scholarship competition is underway for the 2013 Netroots Nation Conference NN13! For the first time Jacob Dean of Filter Free Radio is an applicant and needs your support!

Listen to what the Number One Progressive Talk Show Host Thom Hartmann said on his program April 9, 2013:

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

Dear Friends: I need your help! I'm in the 2013 Netroots Nation Scholarship Competition to attend the #NN13 conference in June! The top 5 people with the most votes win! It's incredibly easy and fast to vote! I'm currently about 70 votes away from 5th place. Please take one minute here...  THANK YOU!

Please vote for Jacob today and bring a real independent alternative progressive voice to Netroots Nation in 2013! Thank you so much!

Vote here:

Every year, the Netroots Nation Convention has provided progressive activists and candidates a forum to strengthen the online community and grow the progressive movement while inspiring action and growing new ideas to affect change. Applicants for the DFA Netroots Nation scholarship must have a demonstrated commitment to growing the progressive movement whether through blogging, organizing, issue advocacy or electoral worth.

Any DFA Member or participant in the larger netroots or progressive movement may apply for the scholarship. Applicants are encouraged to solicit support for the application from their personal networks. Individuals may only vote for each applicant once. A select group of scholarships will be awarded solely on the basis of support gathered. The remaining scholarships will be awarded on merit at the discretion of the selection committee. The selection committee is comprised of DFA, Netroots Nation, and partner staff. The scholarship provides four nights of hotel and the conference fee. Scholars are responsible for their travel and food expenses.

Why I deserve a Netroots Nation Scholarship: I have the courage to face the realities of our time, and dare to share it for the world to see. Now more than ever we need to stand up to corporate censorship of information. We must engage without fear and without filter while coldly assessing reality, and then collectively figure out how to respond. I want to address systemic issues with sustainable solutions, not play he said she said. I don't have all the answers, but I think I'm asking the right questions. I believe I deserve a scholarship as a young independent, alternative, progressive, broadcaster, journalist, and producer; because I want to engage with and learn from some of the best and brightest, share it, and move the ideas forward to ultimately shape the reality we need.

You can't just talk the talk, you have to walk the walk! While living and working in DC I attended and volunteered at several events and demonstrations (all available in FFR archives online) including the first Keystone XL Pipeline protests at the White House put on by Bill McKibben and friends. I was very active in participating and covering the Occupy movement both in DC, and Portland. I helped organize, co-host, and broadcast Occuthon 2011 a 24/7 non-stop broadcast to help fund raise for local camps nationwide ( I also volunteer at my the public high school radio station KBPS and local community radio station KBOO when I can. Most recently I've been getting active with protests over coal export proposals here in Oregon at the Oregon State Capitol and around Portland. Grass roots activism from the bottom up IS the solution.

More or less the sole mission statement of my show Filter Free Radio is to engage, educate, organize, and activate. Specifically on this topic I've dedicated multiple entire programs to Saul Alinsky's Rules For Radicals and Gene Sharp's From Dictatorship To Democracy - both I think are perfect activism handbooks, and every single blog I write, show I do, protest I attend - whatever- the focus remains to engage, educate, organize, and activate.

Why I think participation in the netroots is important:

From my experiences I understand completely the significance and importance of a Netroots Nation Conference. It goes without saying how important participation in anything is, but simply put, this is the first time I've ever tried to go to Netroots before, this is the Netroots year for me. I'm close enough to drive, and I have extra time and effort available to fully engage in this experience while still job hunting. I'm very much excited and optimistic about Netroots 2013 NN13! If not now, then when?

My Twitter manifesto on online activism: Something engaging & informing breeds activism. Front yard full of oil? Tell 5 friends & they tell 5 friends & they tell 5 friends!

If I could design a bumper sticker it would say: We can't eat money or drink oil

My wild idea for a cool new action: Honestly, I think the answers we seek are starring us straight in the face, we just need to execute a little creative thinking. Also, if I had a crazy big idea that I know would change the world, the cure to cancer or something you'd already know me by now... and I definitely wouldn't post it here. Who knows, maybe we can talk more about some real big ideas at NN13! ;-) Thanks for your vote! Best, JD

I Need Your Help...

Hey friends, Jacob Dean here with a rare request for your help. Please hear me out... OREGON IS NOT AND WILL NOT BE THE COAL PIPELINE TO CHINA. Let's get serious. WE HAVE TO STOP COAL NOW. 24/7 Non-Stop Sustainable Nonviolent Sit-Ins, Marches, Activism, etc at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem until our one simple demand is met: Governor Kitzhaber STOP ALL FOREIGN COMPANIES or anyone else who wants to use our home, Oregon, as a coal export- for their dirty get rich quick schemes! This time it's Australian company Ambre Energy- that didn't EXIST 8 years ago and has it's own financial problems- and other companies in South Korean and China want US coal RIGHT NOW. They are trying to ram cancer causing coal through Oregon for a quick buck while we aren't looking. We must push back against these foreign interests, protect our home, and make sure Governor Kitzhaber knows the people who elected him, and reelected him DEMAND he put a stop to this in Oregon. There is no alternative. - Temporary jobs that won't exist in 24 months are not a sustainable solution to the systemic job issue either. Ambre's own numbers only give 25-30 permanent jobs per facility long term beyond two years. Coal in Oregon is not the way forward. I like my clean air and clean water, frankly between us local folk, we usually try to stay pretty hush hush about how nice it is here... Now too many have fallen silent when the time has come to stand up and defend what we love so much. I'd like to keep what little of Oregon and the Great Pacific Northwest we have left. Please help me. Please help yourself. What are your thoughts? Timing is crucially important we have to act now! Call Governor Kitzhaber's office directly at 503-378-4582 and tell them: OREGON IS NOT, AND WILL NOT, BE THE COAL PIPELINE TO CHINA- FOR AN AUSTRALIAN COMPANY'S PROFIT! Governor Kitzhaber must stop coal now. Leave me a message, your thoughts, your ideas, anything your willing to contribute at 202-697-9337 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Anti-Coal Rally "Sound The Alarm" 03/13/13 Oregon State Capitol

Jacob Dean of Filter Free Radio attends Sound The Alarm on Wednesday March 13, 2013 to cover the rally and add his voice as a native Portland, Oregonian to say NO COAL EXPORTS! The proposed coal exports on the west coast would have a WORSE impact on the climate than the Keystone XL pipeline!
