Tweets, Posts & Chat: Progressive Radio in the Social Media Age - Wednesday, March 26 at 7:00 pm

Impact Hub Seattle 220 Second Avenue South Seattle, WA 98104 Contact Impact Hub Seattle - 1-206-430-6007

Independent journalist Mark Taylor-Canfield leads the next in our series of free community forums. Taylor-Canfield, whose news articles and editorials have been published at Huffington Post, Daily Kos, Truth-out.org, and other major news sources, is a regular contributor to national progressive radio shows headlined by Thom Hartmann, Mike Papantonio/Ring of Fire Radio, Sam Seder/Majority Report, Norman Goldman, Jeff Santos/Revolution Radio Network, Nicole Sandler/Radio or Not and others.

Joining him for a lively panel discussion on how social networking is being used to access, produce and promote progressive media are:

Jacob Dean, host and creator of the Portland-based Filter Free Radio and former producer for The Thom Hartmann Program; and Seattle based Space Dog Radio, “a fully independent radio station that provides entertaining sounds about a wide spectrum of topics while taking the art of radio to a new level.” While progressive cities are losing their progressive radio stations, the digital universe is alive with a rich spectrum of progressive talkers -- from familiar national voices to lesser known but equally impassioned radio talents.

PRNW is working to bringing strong-signal radio back to the greater Seattle area. In the meantime, the extreme right isn’t going away. Join us to explore the power of social networking in building progressive networks and promoting online progressive media. Get your progressive tweet on! Portland Youth Rally Against Coal Exports at Pioneer Square 3/8/14

Jacob Dean covers the No-Coal Exports rally protest organized by Power Past Coal on Saturday 3/8/14 at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Lots of youth and families came out in the rain to make it clear We The People don't want coal coming through here. Jacob Dean plays an amazing speech given by an 8th grade middle school student at the rally and reminds us of Filter Free Radio Episode 87 that exposes little known facts about Ambre energy, the Australian company trying to shove coal down our throats. Recorded live 3/10/14 in Portland, Oregon from FFR Episode #108.

Voters Seek Independent Media for Content They Can Trust

Filter Free Radio has made the news! FFR's Jacob Dean is featured in a new article published this week on the IVN Independent Voter Network by Logan Brown titled "More Voters Turn to Independent Media for Content They Can Trust."

Read the article here: http://ivn.us/2014/03/03/voters-turn-independent-media-content-can-trust/?utm_source=ivn&utm_medium=featured&utm_content=title&utm_campaign=opt-beta-v-1-0

From the article, "Another initiative that branched off from independent media is Open Debates 2016. Jacob Dean, coalition member as well as host and producer for the radio broadcast, “Filter Free Radio,” spoke to how independent media has allowed millions of people to see the third party debates in 2012. The Coalition for Open Debates wants to give voters a chance to watch unscripted debates among presidential candidate with unfiltered questions. Unlike the presidential debates in 2012, the candidates will not receive a list of the questions beforehand either. Open Debates 2016 is a tangible movement focused on providing citizens with a means to become educated voters, while also highlighting one of the many great things that can arise from independent media. But, what does the future hold for independent media? These organizations face challenging roadblocks regarding funding, attracting viewers, and providing unique content so those viewers return. Dean pointed out that independent media largely consists of “trying to tell people what they don’t want to hear” while often critiquing our most powerful public figures and corporations, something possible big donors rarely endorse. The unique aspect of most independent news is the fact that in spite of the funding challenges, people are running, funding, and putting in the hard work to produce stories that give readers the information they need to make well-informed decisions...."
